Tips for Storing Furniture

Storing your furniture in a Colorado Springs self storage facility is more than just dropping it off and forgetting about it. If you expect to take your furniture out of personal storage later in the same condition, you should observe a few precautions. The self storage rentals at Chelton are high quality and safe, but there are still some dangers that only careful preparation can prevent.

Moisture

If your furniture gets wet while in storage, it will stay wet for a long time. As you know, that is a recipe for mold, mildew, discoloration, and all sorts of other moisture disasters. Here are some ways you can keep your sofas, chairs, and wooden items from getting wet:

  • Use a pallet or pieces of wood to get the furniture several inches off the ground. Unexpected flooding, or simply water coming in the door while it is open, can absorb into fabric and create an environment for mold.
  • Make sure that no blankets or covers over the furniture are touching the ground. They can pull water up and onto the furniture, even if it is propped up.
  • If you have recently cleaned the furniture, ensure that it is completely dry before putting it into personal storage. Enclosed self storage rentals do nothing to help damp furniture dry out, and moisture problems could develop quickly.

Breaking

Opening up your Colorado Springs self storage unit and finding broken mirrors, framed prints, and furniture legs might cause you to suspect that someone caused the damage while tampering with your belongings. In reality, this type of damage often occurs simply because these delicate items are not stored appropriately. Don’t lay glass pieces and frames flat; stack them vertically to reduce pressure on fragile surfaces. Also, protect the corners with cardboard so that when it comes time to move the items, accidental bumps will not scratch them.

Other Tips

When storing furniture in Colorado Springs self storage, avoid sealing pieces in plastic. It does not breathe well and increases humidity. It’s okay to lay plastic loosely to protect from dust, though. Personal storage can be a dusty place! Cover everything, preferably with cotton covers, to catch dust. Finally, make sure the self storage rentals you choose are clean and secure. Even the best precautions are useless if it is easy for thieves to break into your facility and steal your furniture.
